Early Life and Music
Lacey Elizabeth Brown was born on August 13, 1985. Her parents are pastors at Victory Church in Amarillo. There, she helped lead a group for college-aged students and taught about civics and Christian values. When she was a child, Lacey learned to play the violin. She also studied at a Bible school in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and went to art school.
Her Music and Influences
Lacey loves different kinds of music, including folk, country, and rock. Some of her favorite artists who inspired her include Patsy Cline, Joni Mitchell, Dolly Parton, and Pete Yorn. She also enjoys bands like Lady Antebellum, Kings of Leon, Coldplay, and U2.
American Idol Journey
Lacey first tried out for American Idol in its eighth season. She made it to the Top 54 in Hollywood but was cut before the Top 36. She tried again for the ninth season in Orlando, Florida. She sang "Over the Rainbow" by Judy Garland from The Wizard of Oz. All the judges, including guest judge Kristin Chenoweth, loved her performance, and she moved on.
During Hollywood week, her song "What a Wonderful World" was shown in a video montage. This video featured contestants who made it to the Top 24. She sang "Landslide" during the semi-finals, but the judges were not very impressed. The next week, they gave negative comments about her performance of "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None the Richer. However, the lead singer of the band, Leigh Nash, liked her version. On the last night before the finals, Lacey sang "The Story" by Brandi Carlile. This performance was seen as much better than her past ones. Lacey eventually made it into the Top 12.
Performances on Idol
When Lacey sang "Ruby Tuesday" by The Rolling Stones (she said her version was like Melanie Safka's), the judges felt it "lacked energy." But Simon Cowell said her singing itself was good. The next day, on March 17, 2010, Lacey was eliminated from the show.
On the night she left, the song "What a Wonderful World" played at the start of the episode. This song was part of a video showing the Top 12's journey. The "Judge's Save" rule was brought back that night. This rule allowed judges to save a contestant from being eliminated. Even though Lacey sang "The Story" again, the judges decided not to save her. Her elimination caused some discussion, especially after host Ryan Seacrest shared the results on Twitter. Lacey thanked her fans and planned to go back to her hometown after doing interviews in New York City. She said she might try acting and continue her music career. She also mentioned she might focus on country music, even though her MySpace page listed "pop" and "folk" as her main styles. A famous quote from Lacey on the show was: "You've got to take no's and turn them into yes'es."
