Ladislav Nagy (born June 1, 1979) is a former professional ice hockey player from Slovakia. He played as a left winger for eight seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL). His NHL teams included the St. Louis Blues, Phoenix Coyotes, Dallas Stars, and Los Angeles Kings.

Early Life and Hockey Start

Ladislav Nagy was born on June 1, 1979, in Šaca, which is a part of Košice, in what was then Czechoslovakia. His family was of Hungarian background.

When he was young, Nagy played in the 1993 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a team from Poprad. He began his junior hockey career in 1995 with HC Košice in the Slovak Extraliga.

Journey to the NHL

The St. Louis Blues picked Ladislav Nagy in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 177th player chosen overall. After being drafted, Nagy moved to North America. He played for the Halifax Mooseheads in the QMJHL during the 1998–99 season. Fans even voted him as their 7th most popular player during the team's 15-year celebration.

Nagy started his professional career in the AHL playoffs that same year with the Worcester Ice Cats. He then played for the St. Louis Blues from 1999 to 2001.

Playing in the NHL

In 2001, Nagy was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes. While playing for the Coyotes, he had three seasons in a row where he scored more than 20 goals, from 2001 to 2004. He also scored 50 points in some of those seasons.

In 2007, Nagy was traded to the Dallas Stars. Later that year, he signed with the Los Angeles Kings. However, he played only 38 games during the 2007–08 season because of an injury.

Later Career and Retirement

After his time in the NHL, Ladislav Nagy moved to Russia. In 2008, he signed with Severstal Cherepovets in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He hoped to regain his form and health there to possibly return to the NHL.

In December 2010, Nagy joined Modo Hockey in Sweden for the rest of the season. On August 1, 2013, he returned to his first club in Slovakia, HC Košice.

Nagy played his final professional season in 2018–19. He ended his 23-year career in his home country, Slovakia, during the 2019 World Championships. In his very last game on May 21, 2019, Nagy was the captain for Slovakia. He scored the winning goal in a shootout against Denmark.

Awards and Achievements

Ladislav Nagy earned several awards during his career, especially in his early years:

  • In 1999, he was named to the All-Rookie Team in the QMJHL.
  • He also won the Michel Bergeron Trophy as the offensive rookie of the year in 1999.
  • He was recognized as the Rookie of the Year in the QMJHL in 1999.
  • The CHL also named him to their All-Rookie Team in 1999.
  • In 2000, he was part of the AHL All-Star Game.

Nagy also won medals representing Slovakia in international tournaments:

  • He won a gold medal at the 2002 World Championships.
  • He earned a bronze medal at the 2003 World Championships.
