Lake Gogebic (goh-GHIB-ik) is the largest natural inland lake in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is a beautiful spot located inside the huge Ottawa National Forest, which covers one million acres. Lake Gogebic State Park is also found right on the lake's western shore.

Where is Lake Gogebic Located?
This large lake is in the far western part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. It is very close to the border with Wisconsin. The lake actually stretches across two different counties: Gogebic County and Ontonagon County. It even crosses two time zones, which is quite unique!
How is the Lake Managed?
Even though Lake Gogebic is a natural body of water, its water level is carefully controlled. The Upper Peninsula Power Company manages the lake's level using the Bergland Dam. This dam is located downstream on the West Branch of the Ontonagon River.

Lake Gogebic is home to many different types of fish. In 2005, a survey by the state Department of Natural Resources found a wide variety of species. This makes the lake a popular spot for fishing.
