Lake Lashaway is a beautiful pond that covers about 293 acres (1.19 square kilometers). It is located near the towns of East Brookfield and North Brookfield, Massachusetts in Massachusetts, USA. The border between these two towns actually cuts the lake almost in half! You can find Lake Lashaway just north of state Route 9 as it goes through East Brookfield. If you want to learn more, the Lake Lashaway Community Association has a website at www.LakeLashaway.org.
About Lake Lashaway
Lake Lashaway is not very deep. Its average depth is about 10 feet (3.05 meters), and its deepest point is around 18 feet (5.49 meters). The water has a brownish color and gets quite warm during the summer months. Many houses and cabins are built along the lake's shore. Some people live there all year round, while others use their homes as a fun place to stay during the summer.
A well-known summer camp for children, Camp Atwater, is located on the north side of the lake in North Brookfield. Lake Lashaway is also part of a larger water system called the Chicopee River Watershed. This means that all the water from the lake eventually flows into the Chicopee River.
How the Lake Was Formed
Lake Lashaway was created by a dam on the East Brookfield River. This dam holds back the water from the Five Mile River and also collects water from underground sources (called an aquifer) in North Brookfield. The water that flows out of Lake Lashaway from this dam then travels about two miles (3 kilometers) down the river to Quaboag Pond. Quaboag Pond is actually where the Quaboag River begins!
Fishing in Lake Lashaway
Lake Lashaway is a great spot for fishing, especially for fish that like warm water. A study done in 1994 found many different kinds of fish living in the lake. Some of these include Large and Small-mouth Bass, Chain Pickerel, Yellow Perch, White Perch, Black Crappie, Bluegill, and Pumpkinseed. You can also find Brown and Yellow Bullhead, Golden Shiner, and Sucker fish here. In the past, Northern Pike were also put into the lake.
