Lake Massawippi is a beautiful freshwater lake located in the Estrie region of Quebec, Canada. It's part of the Memphrémagog area. The lake gets its water from the Tomifobia River at its southern end, near the village of Ayer's Cliff, Quebec. In older times, some people even called it "Lake Tomifobi." The water in Lake Massawippi flows north. It then empties into the Massawippi River, which starts at North Hatley, Quebec village on the lake's northern shore.
Five different towns and townships border the lake. These are North Hatley, Hatley Township, the municipality of Hatley, Ayer's Cliff, and Sainte-Catherine-de-Hatley.
What's in a Name?
The name "Massawippi" comes from the Abenaki language. In English, it means "the big deep lake." This name perfectly describes the lake, as it is quite large and very deep!
Fun Things to Do!
Lake Massawippi has been a popular spot for a long time. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, many wealthy families from the United States came here for summer vacations. Famous people like industrialist Foxhall P. Keene and writer Upton Sinclair owned summer homes on the lake. The Barron family, known for Barron's Magazine, also had estates here.
Today, Lake Massawippi is still a great place to visit. You can find two fancy hotels right on the lake: Hovey Manor and the Ripplecove Inn. These hotels offer beautiful views and a relaxing stay.
Even important leaders have enjoyed the lake. In 2003, former French President Jacques Chirac spent his summer holiday here. He stayed at the Hatley Inn, a luxury hotel that was famous for its amazing food. Sadly, that hotel later burned down. More recently, former American President Bill Clinton has also visited Lake Massawippi many times.
