Lake Monticello is a special community in Fluvanna County, Virginia, United States. It's a private, gated community built around a beautiful lake. About 10,126 people lived here in 2020.
The community gets its name from the lake, which was created by a dam on a small stream flowing into the Rivanna River. Lake Monticello is near Charlottesville, a bigger city.
This area started in the 1960s as a place for summer vacations. But soon, many people decided to live there all year round. It became a "bedroom community," meaning people live there but often work in nearby cities like Charlottesville or Richmond. Many older people also choose to retire here.
Where is Lake Monticello?
Lake Monticello is located in the northwest part of Fluvanna County. It is close to the border of Albemarle County. The Rivanna River forms its northeast edge.
To the southwest, you'll find Virginia State Route 53, also known as the Thomas Jefferson Parkway. This road leads about 14 miles (23 km) northwest to Charlottesville. On the way, you can see Monticello, the famous home of Thomas Jefferson.
The total area of Lake Monticello is about 9.5 square miles (24.5 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, but about 0.6 square miles (1.6 square kilometers) is water. The lake's water eventually flows into the James River.
