The Lake Range is a group of mountains located in western Nevada in the United States. It is completely within Washoe County. The southern two-thirds of the range are part of the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation.
About the Lake Range
The Lake Range stretches about 36 miles (58 km) from north to south. It is usually less than 8 miles (13 km) wide.
Where is the Lake Range?
This mountain range sits between two lakes. To its west is Pyramid Lake. To its east is the dry Winnemucca Lake.
To the southeast, you'll find the Mud Lake Slough. This area used to connect Pyramid Lake to Winnemucca Lake. To the northwest is the San Emidio Desert, with the Fox Range beyond it.
East of the Lake Range, Winnemucca Lake separates it from the Nightingale Mountains and the Selenite Range. To the west, across Pyramid Lake, are the Virginia and the Pah Rah mountain ranges.
Important Peaks
The Lake Range has several named peaks. From north to south, they are:
- Sweetwater Peak, which is 7,114 feet (2,168 m) tall.
- Wildcat Peak, which is 5,843 feet (1,781 m) tall.
- Tohakum Peak, the highest point at 8,182 feet (2,494 m) tall.
- Pyramid Peak, which is 8,101 feet (2,469 m) tall.
A Bit of History
The Lake Range was the location of the final skirmish (a small fight) of the second battle of the Pyramid Lake War.
