Lake View Terrace is a neighborhood located in the San Fernando Valley part of Los Angeles, California. It's known for its suburban feel.

This area is surrounded by beautiful natural spots. These include the Angeles National Forest and parts of the Verdugo Mountains. It's also near other communities like Sylmar and Pacoima. You can easily reach Lake View Terrace by major roads and the Foothill Freeway.

Lake View Terrace is a diverse community. Many different groups of people live here. It's also famous for its large number of horse owners. It's one of the few places in Los Angeles where people can keep horses at their homes.

History of Lake View Terrace

Lake View Terrace was once part of a large Mexican land grant called Rancho Tujunga. Early settlers here sold firewood to people in El Pueblo, which is now Los Angeles. In the 1800s, a family named Hansen started a horse ranch in the area.

Building the Hansen Dam

In 1939, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers took over the ranch land. They needed to build a dam because of frequent floods in the San Fernando Valley. The Hansen Dam was completed in 1940.

How Lake View Terrace Got its Name

The name Lake View Terrace might come from Holiday Lake. This was a 150-acre lake behind the dam. It was a popular vacation spot in the 1950s. However, the lake later dried up. Lake View Terrace became well-known after a significant event happened there in 1991.

Community Life and People

Lake View Terrace has a population of about 12,719 people. The average household income is around $67,985. This area has fewer people living per square mile compared to many other parts of Los Angeles.

What Lake View Terrace Looks Like

Lake View Terrace has two main looks: "town" and "country." The western side is more urban. It has more homes close together and schools. The eastern side feels more rural. Here, homes are set up for keeping horses and for farming.

Residents have worked hard to keep their semi-rural way of life. They have fought to protect the natural feel of the area. For example, in 2003, they got the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to clean up debris from lakes near the Hansen Dam. Newer and more expensive homes are found in the northeast. Older neighborhoods are located to the east. Many people consider Lake View Terrace a "hidden area" because it's not as well-known as some neighboring communities.

Culture and Lifestyle

Lake View Terrace keeps a relaxed, rural image. People who live here often enjoy the outdoors and the quiet life. If you visit, you might even smell livestock, which is part of the community's charm!
