The Lasionycta uniformis is a fascinating type of moth from the family Noctuidae, often called owlet moths. These moths live in the mountains of western North America. You can find them from southern Yukon all the way down to northern California and Colorado. There's even a special group of them living far away in eastern Quebec.

Where They Live

These moths love to fly over areas called alpine tundra. This is a cold, treeless place found on high mountains. They are most often seen on rocky slopes, especially near the treeline. The treeline is the highest point on a mountain where trees can still grow.

Daily Life of the Moth

Lasionycta uniformis moths are mostly nocturnal, which means they are active at night. They are often drawn to lights, so you might spot them near lamps or campfires after dark. During the night, they can be found feeding on a plant called Silene acaulis, also known as moss campion. This plant grows in rocky, high-altitude areas. Adult moths are usually seen flying from early July to late August.

Different Kinds of Lasionycta uniformis

Just like people from different parts of the world might look a little different, there are several types, or subspecies, of the Lasionycta uniformis moth. Each subspecies lives in a specific mountain region.

Lasionycta uniformis uniformis

This subspecies lives in the Rocky Mountains and the Purcell Mountains in southwestern British Columbia. Their home stretches north into northeastern British Columbia.

Lasionycta uniformis multicolor

You can find the multicolor subspecies starting from Montana Mountain in southwestern Yukon. They live southwards along the British Columbia Coast Range and into the Cascade Range in southern Washington.

Lasionycta uniformis fusca

The fusca subspecies makes its home from central Colorado and northern Utah. They also live up to the Beartooth Plateau, which is on the border between Wyoming and Montana.

Lasionycta uniformis shasta

This subspecies is found on Mount Shasta in the Cascade Range of northern California. Scientists think they might also live in other parts of northern California and Oregon, especially in the southern Cascades or the Klamath Mountains.

Lasionycta uniformis handfieldi

The handfieldi subspecies has a unique home. It lives on Mount Albert, which is located on the Gaspé Peninsula in Quebec. This is an isolated group, meaning they are far away from the other populations of Lasionycta uniformis.
