The Story of Lassie's Journey
The movie's story begins with Sam Carraclough, a miner who has lost his job. He struggles to earn enough money to feed his family. Sadly, he has to sell their beloved collie dog, Lassie, to the Duke of Rudling. The Duke's granddaughter, Cilla, sees Lassie and immediately likes her.
Sam's young son, Joe, is heartbroken by Lassie's departure. The Duke's servant, Hynes, is not kind to Lassie. Lassie keeps escaping and returning to the Carraclough family. Each time, the family has to return her to the Duke. Hynes unfairly blames Joe for Lassie running away.
For the holiday season, the Duke travels to the Scottish Highlands and takes Lassie with him. Lassie escapes again, this time with Cilla's help, after Hynes mistreats her. The Duke fires Hynes for his cruelty. Lassie then begins an incredible 500-mile journey back home to Yorkshire.
Meanwhile, Joe's father, Sam, joins the army for World War I to support his family. During her long trip, Lassie faces many challenges. She climbs mountains, swims across a river, and passes the famous Loch Ness. She also has to avoid dog catchers.
A kind puppeteer and circus performer, played by Peter Dinklage, takes Lassie in for a while. Lassie even becomes friends with his small dog, Toots. Later, some bad men attack them, killing Toots. The angry performer and Lassie chase the men away. Lassie then leaves her new friend and finally reaches her home on Christmas Day.
She collapses outside the church where her family is attending mass. After the service, the family's other dog helps them find Lassie. She is exhausted, sick, and almost gone. They quickly take her home. The veterinarian tells them Lassie might not survive.
Hynes, who now lives in the village, finds out Lassie has been found. He brings police officers to the Carraclough house to take Lassie to the Duke's estate. The family is forced to go with them. But the Duke, recognizing Lassie, decides to let the family keep her. He pretends it's not the same dog and kicks Hynes off his property for good.
After Lassie gets better, the Duke offers Sam and his family Hynes' old job and house. Cilla sees that her strict grandfather has a kind side. She visits the family to see Lassie's new puppies. The movie ends with Joe and Cilla happily playing with Lassie and her puppies.
