Nicholas Simon Lyndhurst (born 20 April 1961) is a famous English actor. He started acting when he was a child. He is best known for playing Rodney Trotter in the funny TV show Only Fools and Horses. This show was on BBC from 1981 to 2003.

Nicholas Lyndhurst has also had big roles in other popular TV shows. These include Butterflies, Goodnight Sweetheart, and New Tricks. Recently, he joined the cast of the new American TV show Frasier in 2023.

He has won two National Television Awards for his acting in Goodnight Sweetheart. He was also nominated for other important awards for his role in Only Fools and Horses.

Early Life and Education

Nicholas Lyndhurst was born on April 20, 1961. His parents were Joe and Liz. He grew up in a place called Emsworth in Hampshire, England.

His grandfather, Francis Lyndhurst, was also involved in entertainment. He was a painter for theater sets and a film director. He even started an early film studio. Nicholas went to East Wittering Primary School. He also studied acting at the Corona Theatre School in London.

Acting Career

Nicholas Lyndhurst started his acting journey very early. His first film role was in Bequest to the Nation in 1973. He appeared in many TV commercials and children's films during the 1970s.

One of his first big TV roles was in 1976. He played both Tom Canty and Prince Edward in a BBC version of The Prince and the Pauper. Two years later, he became even more well-known. He starred in two BBC comedy shows: Going Straight and Butterflies.

Only Fools and Horses

Nicholas Lyndhurst's most famous role came in another BBC comedy, Only Fools and Horses. In this show, he played Rodney Trotter. Rodney was the younger brother of the main character, Derek "Del Boy" Trotter, played by David Jason.

Only Fools and Horses first aired in 1981. It became super popular, especially by 1996. In 2004, people in the UK voted it Britain's Best Sitcom. Nicholas was in the show from the very beginning until its last episode in 2003.

Other TV Shows and Films

During the 1980s and 90s, Nicholas Lyndhurst continued to act in many shows. He played Ashley Phillips in ITV's The Two of Us. He was also MI5 agent Peter "Piglet" Chapman in The Piglet Files.

From 1993 to 1999, he starred as Gary Sparrow in the time-travel comedy Goodnight Sweetheart. He even came back to play Gary Sparrow in a special episode in 2016.

Nicholas also appeared in advertisements for WH Smith, a stationery store. He played all four members of a family in these ads! In 1999, he played the bad guy, Uriah Heep, in the TV film David Copperfield. Young actor Daniel Radcliffe was also in that film.

From 2013 to 2015, he joined the cast of the police show New Tricks. He played Danny Griffin. In 2019, he acted in a musical called Carousel and Man of La Mancha on stage in London.

In 2019, he appeared in an episode of the CBBC comedy show So Awkward. He acted alongside his son, Archie Lyndhurst, in this episode. In 2023, Nicholas was chosen to play Professor Alan Cornwall in the new Frasier TV series.

Nicholas Lyndhurst married Lucy Jane Smith on September 1, 1999. Lucy used to be a ballet dancer. They had a quiet wedding ceremony in a church in Chichester, West Sussex. They had been engaged since 1990.

Nicholas and Lucy had one child, a son named Archie Bjorn Lyndhurst. Archie was born on October 4, 2000. He also became an actor and was known for his role as Ollie Coulton in the CBBC show So Awkward. Sadly, Archie passed away in his sleep on September 22, 2020, at the age of 19. He had a brain hemorrhage caused by a type of leukemia. Nicholas and Lucy shared that they were very sad and asked for privacy during that difficult time.

Nicholas and his wife now live in West Wittering, West Sussex. Nicholas enjoys underwater diving, beekeeping, and flying his own airplanes.
