How West Wittering is Governed
West Wittering was first written about in the Domesday Book in 1086. This was a very old record of land and property in England. At that time, the village had four households. Most of the land was used for farming.
Today, West Wittering is part of an "electoral ward." This is an area that votes for its local representatives. This ward also includes parts of a nearby village called Birdham. In 2011, the total population of this ward was 4,472 people.

Chichester Harbour is also partly within the parish. This harbour is super important for nature. It's a wetland that is recognized internationally for its importance. It's also a Special Protection Area for wild birds. Many different kinds of birds, especially waterfowl and waders, come here in winter. Five species of these birds are found in such large numbers that the area is considered internationally important for them.
The beach at West Wittering is part of Chichester Harbour. The harbour is also an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This means it's a beautiful landscape that is protected. The beach is managed by the National Trust, a charity that looks after special places. It's also an SSSI because of its unique habitats and wildlife.
