West Wittering is a lovely village in West Sussex, England. It's located on the Manhood Peninsula, a piece of land surrounded by water on three sides. The village is close to the mouth of Chichester Harbour.

West Wittering is about 6.5 miles southwest of Chichester. It's also near the border with Hampshire. The village is famous for its beautiful sandy beach. In 2017, the beach's water quality was described as excellent.

In 1872, about 616 people lived here. By 2001, the population grew to 2,684. Today, West Wittering has its own primary school.

How West Wittering is Governed

West Wittering was first written about in the Domesday Book in 1086. This was a very old record of land and property in England. At that time, the village had four households. Most of the land was used for farming.

Today, West Wittering is part of an "electoral ward." This is an area that votes for its local representatives. This ward also includes parts of a nearby village called Birdham. In 2011, the total population of this ward was 4,472 people.

Amazing Nature and Wildlife

West Wittering is home to some very special natural areas. Part of Bracklesham Bay, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), runs along the coast here. An SSSI is a protected area because of its rare plants, animals, or geology.

Chichester Harbour is also partly within the parish. This harbour is super important for nature. It's a wetland that is recognized internationally for its importance. It's also a Special Protection Area for wild birds. Many different kinds of birds, especially waterfowl and waders, come here in winter. Five species of these birds are found in such large numbers that the area is considered internationally important for them.

The beach at West Wittering is part of Chichester Harbour. The harbour is also an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This means it's a beautiful landscape that is protected. The beach is managed by the National Trust, a charity that looks after special places. It's also an SSSI because of its unique habitats and wildlife.

People love the beach for its clean water, which makes it great for swimming. It's also known as one of the best places in the UK for exciting water sports like windsurfing and kitesurfing.
