Laufen-Uhwiesen is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the Andelfingen district within the Canton of Zürich. This area is known for its beautiful scenery and history.

History of Laufen-Uhwiesen
Laufen-Uhwiesen was first mentioned in old records way back in the year 858. At that time, it was simply called ad Laufin. Later, in 1290, the name ze Uwisan appeared. This shows that the area has been settled for a very long time!
Geography and Nature
Laufen-Uhwiesen covers an area of about 6.3 square kilometers (which is about 2.4 square miles). A large part of this land, about 40%, is used for farming. This means you'll see lots of fields and farms here. Even more of the land, about 44%, is covered by forests, making it a very green place.
About 12% of the area has buildings and roads, where people live and travel. The rest of the land, a small part, includes rivers or other natural areas that aren't used for farming or building.
This municipality is located near the city area of Schaffhausen, even though it's in the Canton of Zürich. It includes a few smaller areas:
- The village of Uhwiesen, which sits on a raised area called a terrace, part of the Cholfirst hill.
- The village of Laufen, which is home to Laufen Castle. This castle is right next to the famous Rhine Falls, one of Europe's largest waterfalls!
- The small village, or hamlet, of Nohl, which is on the right side of the Rhine River.
Before 1840, Laufen-Uhwiesen was actually part of another municipality called Flurlingen.
People and Life in Laufen-Uhwiesen
As of 31 December 2020, Laufen-Uhwiesen has a population of 1,779 people. Over the past ten years, the number of people living here has grown by about 13%.
Most people in Laufen-Uhwiesen speak German (about 97%). A smaller number of people speak English (0.8%) or French (0.4%).
In the 2007 elections, the most popular political group was the SVP, which received about 44% of the votes. Other popular parties included the FDP (15.5%), the SPS (12.2%), and the Green Party (9.2%). These parties represent different ideas about how the country should be run.
When looking at the age of the people living here (as of 2000):
- Children and teenagers (ages 0-19) make up about 22% of the population.
- Adults (ages 20-64) make up about 62.5%.

Getting Around
The Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall railway station is a train stop in Laufen-Uhwiesen. It's part of the S-Bahn Zürich network, specifically on the S33 line. This makes it easy for people to travel to and from the municipality by train.
