About Laura Gallego
Laura Gallego García was born in Quart de Poblet, Valencia, Spain. This was on October 11, 1977. She writes many books for children and young people. She is especially known for her exciting fantasy stories. Laura studied Hispanic Philology at the University of Valencia. This means she learned a lot about the Spanish language and literature.
Laura's Writing Journey
Laura Gallego started writing very early. When she was just 11 years old, she began a story called 'Zodiaccía, a different world'. It took her ten years to finish it. Even though this book was never published, it is very special to her. This experience made her sure she wanted to be a novelist. For years, she sent her stories to different writing contests.
After finishing high school, Laura went to the University of Valencia. She kept sending her stories to publishers. Finally, her first book, 'Finis Mundi', was published. This happened after she had written 13 other books that were not published. In 1999, 'Finis Mundi' won the 'Barco de Vapor' Prize. This is a big award given by the SM publishing house every year.
After 'Finis Mundi', Laura wrote more stories. These included 'Mandrágora' and the 'Crónicas de la Torre' series. While she is famous for her juvenile novels, she also writes books for younger children.
In 2002, she won the 'Barco de Vapor' Prize again. This time, it was for her novel 'La leyenda del rey errante'. She has worked a lot with SM publishing house. Together, they have published many popular books. Some of these are 'El coleccionista de relojes extraordinarios' and the 'Crónicas de la Torre' saga.
Her most successful series is the trilogy 'Memorias de Idhún'. It started in 2004. The three books are 'Memorias de Idhún I: La Resistencia', 'Memorias de Idhún II: Tríada', and 'Memorias de Idhún III: Panteón'. More than 750,000 copies of these books have been sold.
Laura also helped start a university magazine called 'Náyade'. It was given out at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Valencia. She was a co-director from 1997 to 2010.
She has written many other stand-alone fantasy books. One example is 'Alas negras', which is a sequel to 'Alas de fuego'. She has also written realistic stories. The series «Sara y las goleadoras» is about a girls' soccer team. Titles include 'Creando equipo' and 'Las chicas somos guerreras'.
In October 2011, her novel 'Donde los árboles cantan' was published. It won the 'Premio Nacional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil' in 2012. She also received the 'Cervantes Chico' Prize. In 2012, she wrote a children's book called 'Mago por casualidad'.
In March 2017, she published 'Por una rosa'. This book has three stories by three different writers. Laura Gallego, Javier Ruescas, and Benito Taibo each wrote a story. These stories are all set in the world of the classic tale 'Beauty and the Beast'.
Laura's Writing Style
Laura Gallego explores many different types of stories. She started with historical-fantasy in 'Finis Mundi'. She also wrote science-fiction with 'Las hijas de Tara'. Later, she focused on epic fantasy, like in her 'Memorias de Idhún' series. She also writes stories specifically for children.
In her fantasy stories, especially 'Memorias de Idhún', love is a very important theme. Sometimes it is even more important than the fantasy elements. Her characters often show their feelings, doubts, and disappointments. They are guided by their emotions, more than by ideas like honor or duty. This is a key difference from writers like Tolkien. Thinking about feelings takes up a lot of space in her dialogues. This is helped by the passionate love triangle in 'Memorias de Idhún'. She gets ideas from other writers too, like Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Their works, such as 'La espada de Joram' and 'Dragonlance', have inspired her.
