About Laura Gallego García

Laura Gallego García was born in Quart de Poblet, Valencia, Spain, on 11 October 1977. She is a Spanish writer known for her children's and young adult books. She especially loves writing fantasy stories. Laura studied Hispanic Philology at the University of Valencia. This means she studied the Spanish language and literature.

Laura's Journey to Becoming a Writer

Laura started writing very young, at just 11 years old. Her first long story was called ‘Zodiaccía, a different world’. She spent ten years working on it. Even though it was never published, this story made her sure she wanted to be a novelist. For many years, she sent her stories to different writing contests.

When she was 21, she published her first book, ‘Finis Mundi’. This was a big moment for her! Before ‘Finis Mundi’, she had written 13 other books that were not published. In 1999, ‘Finis Mundi’ won the ‘Barco de Vapor’ Prize. This is a well-known award given by the SM publishing house every year.

After ‘Finis Mundi’, Laura wrote more popular books. These included ‘Mandrágora’ and the four-book series ‘Crónicas de la Torre’. While she is famous for her juvenile novels, she has also written many stories for younger children.

Major Successes and New Adventures

In 2002, Laura won the ‘Barco de Vapor’ Prize again. This time, it was for her novel ‘La leyenda del rey errante’. She has worked a lot with SM publishing house. Together, they published books like ‘El coleccionista de relojes extraordinarios’ and the ‘Crónicas de la Torre’ series.

Her biggest success came in 2004 with her second trilogy, ‘Memorias de Idhún’. This series includes ‘Memorias de Idhún I: La Resistencia’, ‘Memorias de Idhún II: Tríada’, and ‘Memorias de Idhún III: Panteón’. More than 750,000 copies of these books have been sold!

Laura also helped create a university magazine called ‘Náyade’. It was shared at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Valencia. She was a co-director of the magazine from 1997 to 2010.

Later, she published many other stand-alone books. Most of these were also in the fantasy genre. She also wrote a sequel to ‘Alas de fuego’, called ‘Alas negras’. Laura even tried writing realist literature with the series «Sara y las goleadoras». This series includes titles like ‘Creando equipo’ and ‘Las chicas somos guerreras’.

In 2012, her novel ‘Donde los árboles cantan’ won the ‘Premio Nacional de Literatura Infantil y Juvenil’. This is a very important award in Spain. She also won the ‘Cervantes Chico’ Prize. In the same year, she wrote another children's book, ‘Mago por casualidad’.

In March 2017, Laura published ‘Por una rosa’. This book has three stories by different authors, including Laura Gallego. The stories are all inspired by the classic tale ‘Beauty and the Beast’.

Laura's Writing Style

Laura Gallego has explored many different types of stories. She started with historical-fantasy with ‘Finis Mundi’. She also wrote science-fiction with ‘Las hijas de Tara’. Later, she focused on epic fantasy, which you can see in her ‘Memorias de Idhún’ series. She also writes wonderful stories for children.

Themes in Her Fantasy Stories

In her fantasy books, especially ‘Memorias de Idhún’, feelings and love are very important. Sometimes, they are even more important than the fantasy elements. Her characters often show their feelings, doubts, and disappointments. They are guided by their emotions, rather than just honor or duty. This makes her different from writers like Tolkien.

Laura's books often have a lot of dialogue and thoughts about feelings. For example, in ‘Memorias de Idhún’, she uses a passionate love triangle. This allows her to explore deep emotions. She gets ideas from other fantasy writers like Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Some of their works that inspire her include ‘La espada de Joram’ and ‘Dragonlance’.
