Laura D'Andrea Tyson, born on June 28, 1947, is an important American economist. She is currently a distinguished professor at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. She also works as a senior fellow at the Berggruen Institute.
Ms. Tyson held two very important jobs in the White House under President Bill Clinton. She was the 16th Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers from 1993 to 1995. After that, she became the 2nd Director of the National Economic Council from 1995 to 1996. She was the first woman to hold both of these powerful positions. In fact, she is still the only person who has served in both roles.

Early Life and Education
Laura D'Andrea Tyson was born in New Jersey. Her father was Italian American, and her mother had Swedish and Dutch family roots.
She studied Economics at Smith College. She graduated in 1969 with top honors. Later, she earned her Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1974. Her main teacher for her Ph.D. was Evsey Domar.
After finishing her studies, Ms. Tyson started teaching. She joined the economics department at Princeton University in 1974. In 1977, she became a professor of economics at the University of California, Berkeley. By 1990, she was also teaching business administration.
Career in Government
On December 12, 1992, President-elect Bill Clinton announced that he wanted Laura Tyson to lead his Council of Economic Advisers. The United States Senate approved her for this role in 1993. She worked in this position until 1995.
From 1995 to 1996, she served as the Director of the National Economic Council. As mentioned, she was the first woman to hold both of these important government jobs. During her time with the Clinton administration, Ms. Tyson spoke out in favor of the GATT. She believed this trade agreement would help create more jobs in America.
After Government Service
After leaving her government roles, Laura Tyson went back to the University of California, Berkeley. She became the Dean of the Haas School of Business from 1998 to 2001. A dean is like the head of a college or school within a university.
Later, she served as the Dean of London Business School from 2002 to 2006. She was the first woman to lead both of these well-known business schools.
Ms. Tyson has also been a member of many important groups and company boards. She has been on the board of directors for companies like Morgan Stanley and AT&T Inc.. She is also part of the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation.
She has written many books and articles. These writings often focus on how countries compete in business, international trade, and how countries in Central Europe changed their economies to a market system.
Ms. Tyson writes regularly for newspapers and magazines. She shares her ideas about economic policy in publications like The Washington Post and The New York Times.
Besides her teaching at UC Berkeley, Ms. Tyson is also on the board of trustees for the Blum Center for Developing Economies at UC Berkeley. This center works to find solutions for problems like extreme poverty and disease in developing countries.
In 2010, Ms. Tyson joined Berkeley Research Group, LLC, which is a company that gives expert advice. In November 2013, she started the Institute for Business and Social Impact at the University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business. Since 2012, she has also written monthly articles for Project Syndicate, an international media group.
