Laura D'Andrea Tyson (born June 28, 1947) is an American economist and university leader. She is a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. She also works as a senior fellow at the Berggruen Institute.

Laura Tyson held important roles in the United States government. She was the 16th Chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers from 1993 to 1995. She then became the 2nd Director of the National Economic Council from 1995 to 1996. Both roles were under President Bill Clinton. Laura Tyson was the first woman to hold each of these important positions. She is also the only person to have served in both roles.

Early Life and Education

Laura D'Andrea Tyson was born in New Jersey. Her father was Italian American. Her mother had Swedish and Dutch family roots.

She studied Economics at Smith College. She graduated with high honors in 1969. Later, she earned her Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1974.

After her studies, she taught economics at Princeton University from 1974 to 1977. In 1977, she became a professor of economics at the University of California, Berkeley. She was named a professor of business administration in 1990.

Government and Business Career

In 1992, President-elect Bill Clinton chose Laura Tyson for a top economic job. She became the Chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers in 1993. This council gives advice to the President on economic matters.

From 1995 to 1996, she served as the Director of the National Economic Council. This council helps coordinate economic policy across the government. She was the first woman to hold both of these high-level positions. During her time with the Clinton administration, she supported the GATT. She believed this trade agreement would create more jobs in America.

Leadership in Education

After leaving government, Laura Tyson returned to the University of California, Berkeley. She became the Dean of the Haas School of Business from 1998 to 2001. A dean is a leader of a college or school within a university.

Later, she served as Dean of London Business School from 2002 to 2006. She was the first woman to lead both of these major business schools.

Board Memberships and Advisory Roles

Laura Tyson has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1987. This group studies international issues. She has also served on the boards of directors for several large companies. These include Morgan Stanley, AT&T Inc., and Eastman Kodak.

She is also a member of the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation. In 2010, she joined the Board of Directors for CB Richard Ellis. She also advises QFINANCE, a financial information platform.

Writings and Current Work

Laura Tyson has written many books and articles. Her work often focuses on how countries compete in business, international trade, and how economies in Central Europe changed to market systems.

She used to write a regular column for BusinessWeek magazine. She also writes about economic policy for newspapers like The Washington Post and The New York Times.

Besides her teaching at UC Berkeley, she is on the Board of Trustees for the Blum Center for Developing Economies. This center works to find ways to solve extreme poverty and disease in developing countries.

In 2010, she became a special advisor for Berkeley Research Group, LLC. This company provides expert advice. Since 2012, she has written monthly articles for Project Syndicate, an international media group.

In 2013, Laura Tyson started the Institute for Business and Social Impact at the University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business. This institute focuses on how businesses can have a positive effect on society.
