Lawrence Montaigne (born February 26, 1931 – died March 17, 2017) was an American actor, writer, dancer, and stuntman. He was best known for his roles in many TV shows during the 1960s, especially his appearances in Star Trek.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Lawrence Montaigne was born in New York. He later grew up in Rome, Italy. Because he lived in Italy, he learned to speak several languages. This skill helped him get acting jobs in movies made in different countries.
Before becoming an actor, Montaigne served in the United States Marine Corps. He was even in the same boot camp as his future friend, the famous actor Steve McQueen. Like many young American actors, he traveled to Italy in the early 1960s to start his film career.
Famous TV Roles
Montaigne appeared in many popular television shows. In 1965, he played Dr. Chauncy Hartlund in an episode of Perry Mason.
One of his most famous roles was in Star Trek. In 1966, he played Decius, a Romulan character, in the episode "Balance of Terror". A year later, in 1968, he returned to Star Trek as a different character. This time, he played Stonn, a Vulcan who was the partner of Spock's intended bride, T'Pring, in the episode "Amok Time". He even played Stonn again in 2006 in a fan-made mini-series called Star Trek: Of Gods and Men.
He also appeared as a guest star on many other well-known TV shows. These include Batman, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Mission: Impossible, The Time Tunnel, The Invaders, Hogan's Heroes, and Bonanza.
Movie Appearances
Lawrence Montaigne also acted in several movies. Some of his film roles include The Great Escape (1963), Captain Sindbad (1963), Tobruk (1967), and Escape to Witch Mountain (1975).
During the 1980s, Montaigne shared his knowledge by teaching film at North Texas State University. Later in his life, he lived in Las Vegas, Nevada. He also worked translating medical texts for a company. In 2007, he lent his voice to a web series called Star Trek: The Continuing Mission.
Lawrence Montaigne passed away on March 17, 2017, at the age of 86.
