History of Layyah
Early Beginnings
The town of Layyah was started around the year 1550. It was founded by Kamal Khan Mirani. His family, the Miranis, were also involved in founding Dera Ghazi Khan.
Around 1610, the Jaskani Balochs took control of Layyah from the Mirani rulers. They ruled the area until 1787.
Changes in Rulers
Later, a person named Abdun Nabi Sarai was made Governor by Timur Shah Durrani. But just three years after that, Layyah became part of the area governed by Muhammad Khan Sadozai. He moved his main office to Mankera.
In 1794, Humayun Shah, who was trying to become king of Kabul, was caught near Layyah. He was brought into the town, and his eyes were blinded by order of Zaman Shah.
British Era and Modern Times
Under the Sikh Government, Layyah became an important center for managing the surrounding land again. When the British took over in 1849, Layyah was briefly a main administrative center.
However, this didn't last long. The British changed Layyah to a smaller administrative unit called a Tehsil headquarters. It became part of Dera Ismail Khan. In 1901, Layyah was moved to the new Mianwali District. Later, it became part of the Muzaffargarh District.
In 1982, Layyah Tehsil was made into a full District headquarters. This new district included three Tehsils: Layyah, Karor, and Chaubara. The local government for the city was set up in 1875.
