Early life

Léa Seydoux was born on July 1, 1985, in Paris, France. Her father, Henri, is a businessman, and her mother, Valérie, is a philanthropist, which means she works to help others. Seydoux grew up in a well-known family in France that is very involved in the movie industry. Her grandfather, Jérôme Seydoux, is the chairman of the film company Pathé, and her great-uncle, Nicolas Seydoux, is the chairman of Gaumont.

Despite her family's connections, Seydoux has said that they did not help her start her acting career. As a child, she did not want to be an actress. She dreamed of becoming an opera singer and studied music at the Conservatoire de Paris. However, she was very shy, which made singing difficult for her.

Her parents divorced when she was three. They traveled a lot for work, so she often felt lonely as a child. To help her learn English, her father sent her to a summer camp in the United States for six years.

"My grandfather Jérôme has never felt the slightest interest in my career. [My family] have never lifted a finger to help me. Nor have I asked for anything, ever."

Her mother, Valérie Schlumberger, founded charities to help homeless children and promote the work of African artists. Seydoux is a supporter of her mother's charity work.
