Lembit Oll (born April 23, 1966 – died May 16, 1999) was a very talented chess grandmaster from Estonia. He was known for his strong play and achieved a high ranking in the world of chess.

Lembit Oll's Chess Journey

Lembit Oll was born in Kohtla-Järve, Estonia, on April 23, 1966. He quickly showed his talent for chess. In 1982, he became the Estonian Chess Champion. Two years later, in 1984, he won the U20 Soviet Chess Championship.

The FIDE (International Chess Federation) recognized his skill. They gave him the international master title in 1983. By 1990, he earned the highest title in chess: grandmaster.

After becoming a grandmaster, Lembit Oll often played for Estonia. He competed in major events like the Chess Olympiads and European Team Chess Championships. In July 1998, he reached his best-ever ranking. He was ranked No. 25 in the world with a rating of 2650 points. His last tournament was in 1999 in Nova Gorica, where he finished tied for second place.

  • In 1994, he played on the first board at the 31st Chess Olympiad in Moscow. He won 3 games, lost 2, and drew 8.
  • In 1996, he played on the second board at the 32nd Chess Olympiad in Yerevan. He won 2 games, lost 1, and drew 9.
  • In 1998, he played on the first board at the 33rd Chess Olympiad in Elista. He won 1 game, lost 0, and drew 7.

About Lembit Oll

Lembit Oll was married and had two sons. He faced some personal difficulties in his life. Despite these challenges, he continued to play chess at a very high level. At the time of his passing, he was still ranked No. 42 in the world by FIDE.

Lembit Oll was buried at Metsakalmistu cemetery in Tallinn. This is the same cemetery where another famous Estonian chess player, Paul Keres, is buried.
