History of Levant

Levant was first settled in 1802. It was originally known as "Kenduskeag Plantation." A man named Major Moses Hodsden helped start the community. He built several important buildings. These included three houses, a sawmill, a grist-mill, a store, and a blacksmith shop. These buildings were in what is now the village of Kenduskeag.

In 1813, the plantation officially became a town. It was given the name Levant. This name comes from a region in the Middle East that is next to the Mediterranean Sea.

Town Changes Over Time

In 1852, a part of Levant separated to form its own town. This new town was called Kenduskeag. It also included a piece of the nearby town of Glenburn. Before this split, Levant had about 1,841 residents.

The Story of John Bovee Dods

In 1824, a minister named John Bovee Dods lived in Levant. He claimed that he had a strange experience. He said he was visited by a spirit. After this, his house became known for unusual activity, like objects moving on their own. This kind of activity is sometimes called poltergeist activity. Many curious people visited his house to see these events.

Dods later changed his beliefs and became a Universalist minister. He moved to a nearby town but continued to preach in Levant. He later moved to Massachusetts. There, he became interested in the study of the mind. He wrote a book called The Philosophy of Electrical Psychology in 1850. He also gave many lectures. Later in 1856, he became involved in spiritualism. He became a well-known figure in this movement in New York City.
