Linescio is a small town (or municipality) located in the Vallemaggia district. It's part of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. It's known for its beautiful mountain views and quiet village life.

Linescio's Past: A Look at History

Linescio was first mentioned in old records in 1437. Back then, it was called Lignazio. Later, in 1602, its name appeared as Linezio.

The Village Church

The main church in Linescio is called S. Remigio. It was first built in 1640. Later, it was rebuilt between 1817 and 1819. In 1757, the church became its own separate parish. This meant it had its own priest and could serve the local community directly.

Farming and Changes Over Time

The hillsides around Linescio were shaped into many flat areas called terraces. These terraces were used for farming. Farmers grew crops like rye, hemp, flax, and later, potatoes.

However, many people left Linescio over the years. Some moved to other countries in the 1800s. Others moved to bigger cities after 1950. Because of this, most of the old fields and pastures were no longer used. By the year 2000, no one in Linescio worked in farming anymore.

There was also some mining on the right side of the valley. In the early 2000s, a plan was started to help save the old terraces from falling apart.

Linescio's Location and Landscape
