Lisbon Falls is a special area in the town of Lisbon, located in Androscoggin County, Maine, United States. It's called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a place that the government counts as a separate community for population numbers, even though it's part of a larger town. In 2020, about 4,182 people lived there. Lisbon Falls is also part of the larger Lewiston-Auburn area.

History of Lisbon Falls

Long ago, the Abenaki Indians lived here. They called the falls Anmecangin, which means "much fish." This name shows how important the river was for fishing.

The area was once known as Little River Plantation. In 1799, part of it became Thompsonborough. Then, in 1802, it was renamed Lisbon, after Lisbon, Portugal. In 1806, the rest of Little River Plantation joined Lisbon.

Lisbon Falls as a Mill Town

Because of the strong water power from the Androscoggin River, Lisbon Falls became a small town known for its mills. The Worumbo Mill was a very important mill here. It started in 1864 and was famous around the world for its high-quality woolen fabrics.

The mill was especially known for its special vicuña wool products. There was a famous story about a vicuña sport coat. A wealthy person gave one as a gift to Sherman Adams, who worked for President Eisenhower. This caused a big problem, and Sherman Adams had to leave his job. The Worumbo Mill sadly burned down in 1987.

Another big employer in town was a gypsum mill, but it closed in 2009. Today, many people from Lisbon Falls work at Bath Iron Works, which is a large shipbuilding company nearby in Bath, Maine.

Moxie Days Celebration

Lisbon Falls is also famous for its annual Moxie Days. This is a celebration of a unique soft drink called Moxie. You can find Moxie at Frank Anicetti's corner store, which is officially called the Kennebec Fruit Company. Everyone knows it as The Moxie Store because it's painted bright yellow! Thousands of people from all over the world come to Lisbon Falls every summer to enjoy Moxie Days.
