Elisabeth Corrin Maurus, known as Lissie, is an American singer and songwriter. She was born on November 21, 1982. Lissie released her first collection of songs, called an EP, titled "Why You Runnin'", in November 2009. Her first full album, Catching a Tiger, came out in June 2010. Her second album, Back to Forever, was released in October 2013. Lissie's third album, My Wild West, was released on February 12, 2016. This was her first album as an independent artist and it was very well-received. Her fourth album, Castles, was released on March 23, 2018. Her fifth album, Carving Canyons, was released on September 16, 2022.
Early Life and Music Beginnings
Lissie was born Elisabeth Corrin Maurus in Rock Island, Illinois. She is the youngest of four children. Her father is a doctor, and her mother is an interior designer. Lissie loved singing and music from a young age. When she was nine, she played the main role in the musical Annie. She has said that music helped her a lot during her high school years.
During her last year of high school, Lissie was expelled. She earned her diploma at a different learning center. She then spent two years at Colorado State University. While there, she often performed as an opening act for musicians visiting the city. She also worked with DJ Harry on a song called "All My Life." This song was used in popular TV shows like House and The O.C.. After studying in Paris for a semester, she decided to focus on her music career. In 2007, she made a four-song EP that was played on the radio.
Music Career Highlights
In 2008, famous musician Lenny Kravitz invited Lissie to open for his "Love Revolution Tour." He learned about her music from her MySpace page. Later that year, a song she co-wrote with DJ Morgan Page, "The Longest Road," became very popular. A special remix of this song was even nominated for a Grammy Award.
Her EP, Why You Runnin', was released in November 2009. It was produced by Bill Reynolds from Band of Horses. One of the songs, "Oh Mississippi," was co-written with Ed Harcourt. This EP was named one of the "Eight Most Auspicious Musical Debuts of 2009" by Paste magazine. In early 2010, Lissie toured the United Kingdom, performing before singer-songwriter Joshua Radin.
Lissie signed with Columbia Records in the UK. Her first album, Catching a Tiger, was released on June 21, 2010. It was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. The first song from the album, "In Sleep," was chosen as "Track of The Day" by Q magazine. Another song, "When I'm Alone," was released with the album. iTunes UK later named it their song of the year for 2010.
In August 2010, her song "Cuckoo" was voted "Record of the Week" by listeners of Heart FM Spain. The Cuckoo EP also included Lissie's live version of "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga. This cover song became very popular online. Lissie also sang on four songs for Snow Patrol's album Fallen Empires, which came out in November 2011.
Lissie's cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way" became well-known in 2012. It was used in a TV advertisement and in the movie Safe Haven. The song was also featured in a BBC Radio 4 reading and in a TV show called "Good Behavior."
On November 4, 2015, Lissie announced her new album, My Wild West, would be released on February 12, 2016. She performed her song "Wild West" in an episode of the TV show Twin Peaks in 2017. In 2020, Lissie played a character named Lizzie Poole in the TV show Loudermilk. The songs her character sang in the show were actually Lissie's own songs, like "When I'm Alone."
Personal Life
Lissie lives on a farm in northeast Iowa. She moved there in 2015 from Ojai, California. She enjoys fantasy literature and has said that the His Dark Materials and Harry Potter series are some of her favorite books.
