List of governors of New Hampshire facts for kids
The governor of New Hampshire is the main leader of the U.S. state of New Hampshire. Think of them as the state's chief executive, like a principal for the whole state! They are also in charge of New Hampshire's military forces, like the New Hampshire National Guard.
The current governor is Kelly Ayotte, who started her job on January 9, 2025. The person who served as governor for the longest time was John Taylor Gilman. He was governor for 14 years, from 1794 to 1805 and again from 1813 to 1816.
Understanding the Governor's Role
New Hampshire was one of the first 13 colonies that formed the United States. It officially became a state on June 21, 1788. Before becoming independent, New Hampshire was a colony ruled by the Kingdom of Great Britain.
When New Hampshire first wrote its constitution in 1776, it didn't have a single main leader like a governor. The job of "President" was created in 1784, and then it was renamed "Governor" in 1792. For a long time, governors only served for one year. But in 1877, this changed to two-year terms. There are no limits on how many terms a person can serve as governor in New Hampshire. Also, there isn't a "lieutenant governor" (a second-in-command). If the governor's office becomes empty, the person who leads the New Hampshire Senate steps in as acting governor.
