List of Tuskegee Airmen facts for kids
The Tuskegee Airmen were a brave and special group of mostly African-American pilots and other airmen who served in the United States military during World War II. They were fighter and bomber pilots, but the name "Tuskegee Airmen" also includes all the amazing people who supported them. This means navigators, bombardiers, mechanics, instructors, nurses, and many other important team members. They showed incredible skill and courage, even when facing tough challenges.
In 2006, the Tuskegee Airmen were honored with the Congressional Gold Medal. This is one of the highest awards a civilian can receive in the United States. It recognized their outstanding service and contributions to their country. There are 1007 documented Tuskegee Airmen pilots. You can find a full list of all the graduate cadet pilots in the List of Tuskegee Airmen Cadet Pilot Graduation Classes.
