Cities in Vietnam are very important places! The government decides which towns become cities. They look at how big the area is, how many people live there, and how important the place is for government, money, and culture. Cities in Vietnam are ranked into four types: special, first class (I), second class (II), and third class (III).

Main Cities of Vietnam
Some cities in Vietnam are so important that they are controlled directly by the main Vietnamese government. These are called centrally controlled cities or municipalities. They play a huge role in the country's politics, economy, and culture. Right now, there are five of these special cities.

Some cities are so big that they have smaller cities inside them! These are called municipal cities or subcities. They are part of a larger, centrally controlled city. For example, Thủ Đức is a municipal city within Ho Chi Minh City.
