Bridges from the Past
Ashtabula County has had a total of 62 covered bridges over the years! Many old bridges have been replaced or are no longer standing. Here are a few interesting stories about some of them:
- The Forman Road Covered Bridge was built in 1862. In 1974, it was sold for just $5.00! It was then cut in half, taken apart, and put back together in two different places to become part of Covered Bridge Pizza restaurants in North Kingsville and Andover.
- The Fobes Road Covered Bridge (also called Shaunghum Covered Bridge) was special because it sat on wooden posts instead of stone supports. It was built in 1911. In the 1960s, a truck hit it, causing a lot of damage. Sadly, in 1971, county officials burned it down on purpose.
- The South Windsor or Old Plank Road Covered Bridge was built in 1870. It was destroyed by a fire in 1970, which was caused by someone setting tires on fire inside the bridge.
- Other past bridges include the Graham Road Covered Bridge, the South Ridge Road Covered Bridge, and several bridges over the Ashtabula River and Conneaut Creek.
