The prime minister of Mali is a very important leader in the country. This person is in charge of the Council of Ministers, which is like the main team of government officials. Mali has had prime ministers since it became independent from France in 1960.
So far, seventeen different people have served as Prime Minister of Mali. This count does not include five people who served as "acting" prime ministers for a short time. One person, Modibo Keita, even held the job two separate times! The current Interim Prime Minister of Mali is Abdoulaye Maïga. He has been in this role since November 21, 2024. He was chosen by the National Committee for the Salvation of the People, which has been leading the country since a change in government in 2021.
In 2023, Mali adopted a new set of rules for its government, called a constitution. This new constitution, which started on July 22, 2023, changed how much power the prime minister has. Now, the prime minister and the government report to the president. The president is now the main leader who guides the government's plans and actions.
