The position was first called "Chief Minister" in 1952. Then, from 1956 onwards, it became known as "Prime Minister." This role was removed in 1989 after a change in government. It was brought back in 2017.

Currently, Osman Hussein is the acting Prime Minister of Sudan. He took office on January 19, 2022.
