List of hills of Devon facts for kids
Devon is a beautiful county in southwest England, famous for its stunning countryside and many hills. This article will tell you all about some of the most important hills in Devon. People love to visit these hills for hiking, exploring ancient sites, and enjoying nature.
What Makes a Hill Special?
Hills and mountains are often measured by their height (how tall they are from sea level) and their prominence. Prominence is a bit different; it measures how much a hill rises from the lowest point connecting it to a higher hill. Think of it like this: if you're on a hill, how far down do you have to go before you start climbing another, higher hill? A hill with high prominence usually stands out more and offers amazing views!
In Devon, hills are often put into special groups based on their prominence:
- Marilyns: These are hills with a prominence of at least 150 metres (about 500 feet). They are usually quite noticeable.
- HuMPs: This stands for "Hundred Metre Prominence." These hills have a prominence of at least 100 metres but less than 150 metres.
- TuMPs: These hills have a prominence of at least 30 metres but less than 100 metres.
Hills with lower prominence might be smaller bumps on the side of a bigger hill, or they might be smaller hills that don't stand out as much.
Devon's Highest Points
In the United Kingdom, a "mountain" is usually considered to be at least 2,000 feet (about 610 metres) high. By this definition, Devon has two mountains, both found in the wild and beautiful area of Dartmoor:
- High Willhays: This is the highest point in Devon, reaching 621 metres (2,037 feet). It's also the highest point on Dartmoor. You'll find a large pile of stones, called a cairn, at its top.
- Yes Tor: Standing at 619 metres (2,031 feet), this is the second highest point on Dartmoor. It has a special marker called a trig point at its summit.
