List of tallest buildings in Austin, Texas facts for kids

Austin, the capital city of Texas, is a big city! As of 2023, it's the 10th most populated city in the United States. It's also the main city in the larger Austin area.
Austin has many tall buildings. There are 33 buildings that are at least 100 m (330 ft) (about 328 feet) tall. Austin is also ranked 19th in the country for buildings taller than 150 m (490 ft) (about 492 feet). In Texas, Austin has the second-tallest collection of high-rises, right after Houston.
The tallest completed building in Austin right now is The Independent. It stands at 694 ft (212 m) (211 meters). Next is The Austonian at 683 ft (208 m) (208 meters), and then Fairmont Austin at 591 ft (180 m) (180 meters). The Independent was the tallest building in Austin from 2019 until 2023. It was also the tallest in Texas outside of Dallas and Houston. However, a new building called Sixth and Guadalupe is now under construction and will be even taller at 875 ft (267 m) (267 meters).
For a long time, the Texas State Capitol was the tallest structure in Austin. It was built in the 1880s and is 311 ft (95 m) (95 meters) tall. In the early 1900s, most buildings on Congress Avenue were only one story high. Austin's first tall buildings were the eight-story Scarbrough Building and the nine-story Littlefield Building, built between 1910 and 1912. The Littlefield Building was once the tallest commercial building between New Orleans and San Francisco! In 1928, the city thought about limiting building heights to 100 ft (30 m) (30 meters), but they decided not to.
After the mid-1900s, Downtown Austin started to change. More and more tall buildings began to appear. When the 26-story Westgate Tower was built in 1967, people started to worry. They realized that new skyscrapers might block the beautiful views of the State Capitol. The Capitol was no longer the city's tallest building. The Dobie Center and the Chase Bank Tower both surpassed it.
To protect these views, the Texas government and the City of Austin created 35 special "Texas Capitol View Corridors". These are specific paths where no building can be built too tall, so you can always see the Capitol. By the mid-1980s, Austin had over a dozen skyscrapers. Many new office buildings were built during this time.
Even more high-rises started popping up in the 1990s and beyond. This was different from Dallas and Houston, where skyscraper building slowed down. Experts say Austin's smaller size and high land costs encouraged buildings to grow taller. The Frost Bank Tower was a big part of a new wave of skyscrapers in the early 2000s. By 2010, many new tall buildings were homes for people or offices for technology companies. By 2023, Austin's high-rises combined were taller than those in Dallas!
