Austin, the capital city of Texas, is a very large city in the United States. It is the 10th most populated city in the country. Austin is also the main city in the Greater Austin area.

Many tall buildings stand in Austin. There are 33 buildings that are at least 328 feet (100 meters) tall. Austin ranks 97th in the world for its number of very tall buildings (over 492 feet or 150 meters). It is 15th in the U.S. and 3rd in Texas for these super-tall structures. The total height of all of Austin's high-rises is second only to Houston in Texas.

The current tallest building in Austin is Sixth and Guadalupe, which is 874 feet (266 meters) tall. Before that, The Independent was the tallest at 694 feet (212 meters). The Austonian is the third tallest at 683 feet (208 meters). The Independent was the tallest building in Austin and outside of Dallas and Houston from 2019 until 2023.

Austin's Changing Skyline

The Texas State Capitol building, finished in the 1880s, was Austin's tallest structure for a long time. Back then, the main street, Congress Avenue, mostly had one-story buildings.

Austin's first high-rise buildings were the eight-story Scarbrough Building and the nine-story Littlefield Building. They were built between 1910 and 1912. When it was finished, the Littlefield Building was the tallest business building in the U.S. between New Orleans and San Francisco. In 1928, the city thought about limiting building heights to 100 feet (30 meters), but they decided not to.

After the mid-1900s, Downtown Austin started to change. More tall buildings began to appear. The 26-story Westgate Tower was built in 1967. As more skyscrapers were added between 1967 and 1980, people worried that the new buildings would block views of the State Capitol. The Capitol was no longer the city's tallest building. The Dobie Center and the Chase Bank Tower had surpassed it.

To protect the views of the Capitol, the Texas government and the City of Austin created 35 special areas called Texas Capitol View Corridors. These corridors make sure that certain views of the Capitol building stay clear.

By the mid-1980s, Austin had more than a dozen skyscrapers. At least 12 buildings with 15 or more floors were built during that decade. This was called the "first downtown high-rise wave." These buildings were often made of granite and limestone and were mostly offices.

More skyscrapers were built quickly in downtown Austin starting in the 1990s. This happened even as skyscraper building slowed down in Dallas and Houston. Experts say that Austin's smaller size and crowded downtown made land expensive. This encouraged builders to build taller buildings.

Another wave of new skyscrapers began in the early 2000s. This included the Frost Bank Tower. By 2010, most new skyscrapers were homes or offices for technology companies. By 2023, the total height of Austin's high-rises had grown to be taller than those in Dallas.
