List of tallest structures in the United States facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The height of structures in the United States can be a bit tricky to track. However, the information is public. It's kept by groups like the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Many of these super-tall structures are antenna masts. Building these huge masts needs special engineering skills. Only a few companies build most of them: Doty Moore Tower Services, Kline Towers, LeBlanc Royal Telecom, and Stainless Inc. A mast that's 1,000-foot (300 m) tall can cost between $0.7 and $1.1 million. A 2,000-foot (610 m) tall mast might cost $2.4 to $4 million. The price changes based on how much the tower can hold and how strong the winds are in that area.

Many people think famous places like the Stratosphere Tower are the tallest structures in the U.S. But they are actually the tallest buildings. For example, Taipei 101 was often called the world's tallest structure. However, it was only the tallest occupied building before Dubai's Burj Khalifa was finished. Many antenna towers in the United States and other countries are much taller than Taipei 101.

In the United States, the FAA and FCC must approve all towers taller than 200 feet (61 m). It's very hard to get permission for structures over 2,000 feet (610 m) tall. The FCC thinks they might not be good for the public. The FAA sees them as a danger to airplanes. This means the company wanting to build the tower has to prove it's a good idea. Only when both groups agree on safety and other issues is the plan approved.

Since 1978, the U.S. has used 11 tethered aerostat sites along its southern borders. These balloons float up to 18,000 feet (5,500 m). They carry radar units. But because they float and are not permanent, they are not considered true structures.
