Ljungby Municipality (Ljungby kommun) is a cool area in southern Sweden. It's located in Kronoberg County. The main town, or "seat," is called Ljungby.
This municipality was formed in 1971. It brought together the old City of Ljungby and many smaller rural areas around it. A few small changes to its borders happened in 1974.

Sweden's Tenth Largest Lake
One of Sweden's biggest lakes, Bolmen, is partly located in the northwest of the municipality. It's the tenth largest lake in the whole country!

A Look at Ljungby's History
The history of Ljungby Municipality goes way back to the Viking Age. Vikings used to travel along the Lagan River and lived nearby. One of their settlements was right here in what is now Ljungby Municipality.
The Birth of Ljungby Town
In the 1300s, several important medieval roads crossed through this area. An inn was built during that century. This inn became the very center of what would grow into Ljungby town.
Planting Trees for the Future
During the 1800s, the land closest to Ljungby was mostly sandy and didn't have much plant life. The government even provided money to plant trees. These trees helped to hold the sand together, making the land better for growing plants and crops.

Famous Connections to Ljungby
Ljungby Municipality is connected to some interesting people and events.
- The famous opera singer Christina Nilsson was discovered here. She was performing at the Ljungby market in 1857 when her talent was noticed.
- Metallica bassist Cliff Burton sadly passed away on a highway within the municipality. This happened when the band's tour bus overturned on September 27, 1986. A memorial stone marks the spot.

Several notable people were born in or near Ljungby Municipality:
- Eskil Erlandsson was born in Torpa in 1957. He was once the chairman of the Swedish Defence Committee and later became the Minister for Rural Affairs.
- John Lind, who became the Governor of Minnesota in the United States, was born in the Kånna parish.
- Olof Johansson, born in 1931, is a politician. He used to be the leader of the Swedish Centre Party.
