The community got its name from Sheldrake Pond. This deep pond was formed by glaciers long ago. It is right in the center of the town. Loch Sheldrake is surrounded by other small places. These include Hurleyville, the Town of Liberty, Hasbrouck, Divine Corners, and Woodbourne.

History as a Resort Town
Long ago, Loch Sheldrake was a very popular vacation spot. It was part of the "Catskills Borscht Belt" resort area. Many hotels, bungalow colonies, and boarding houses were here.
Some famous places included the Brown's Hotel. The comedian Jerry Lewis once worked there. There was also the Evans Hotel and the Karmel Hotel. The Karmel Hotel is now Stagedoor Manor. This is a well-known summer camp for performing arts.
