History of Hurleyville
Hurleyville was first settled by a person named William Hurley. In the beginning, the local economy was mostly about dairy farming. Over time, it became a popular part of the Catskills "Borscht Belt" resort area. This area was famous for its many summer hotels and places where people could stay for their vacations.
During its busiest time as a resort, Hurleyville had many popular summer hotels. There were also bungalow colonies and boarding houses. The biggest and most famous was the grand Columbia Hotel. It was located on top of Columbia Hill.
Hurleyville was also a stop on the New York, Ontario & Western Railway (O&W). For a short time, Hurleyville was called "Luzon Station." This happened because mail was getting mixed up with mail from Hurley, New York. The name "Luzon Station" was chosen because the postmaster had a son stationed on Luzon Island in the Philippines. The railway stopped running in 1957 because more people started using cars.
Today, there are three restaurants in Hurleyville. They are called "Casa Mia," "The Pickled Owl," and the "Tango Cafe."
