Jobs and Work in the Past
In 1831, most people in Long Marton worked in farming. The census data shows that many men over 20 were farm labourers. This makes sense because Long Marton has a lot of farmland around it. The 1831 census did not collect information on women's jobs, but it's likely many were not formally employed.
The second biggest type of work in 1831 was in retail and handicrafts. This included shopkeepers and people who made things by hand.
Fifty years later, in 1881, the main type of job in Long Marton changed. Most people worked in domestic service. This meant working in homes, for example, as servants. Both men and women were employed in this industry by then.
The Tirril Brewery, which makes beer, is now based in Long Marton. It is located in a historic red sandstone barn in the village.

St Margaret and St James' Church is an active Anglican church. It is located just south of the village. The church was built during the Norman period. It stands on the site where an older Anglo-Saxon church once stood.
Long Marton Village Hall
The village hall was built in 1839 and has been used by the community ever since. The hall has been improved many times. It has even been made eco-friendly with solar panels. These solar panels were added thanks to a grant from Cumbria County Council.
The hall hosts many different activities for the community. For example, a local history group meets there every two months. This group is part of the Cumbria Local Federation.
Marton House
