History of Loomis

Loomis has had several names over the years. It was first called Placer in 1861. Then it changed to Smithville in 1862. Later, in 1869, it became Pino. Finally, in 1890, the railroad and Post Office decided on Loomis. They changed it from Pino because it sounded too much like Reno.

The name Smithville honored L.G. Smith. He was an important leader in the early town. Loomis is named after James Loomis, who was a pioneer in the area. He ran the saloon, worked for the railroad, and was the postmaster.

In the early 1900s, Loomis was a major center for shipping fruit. It was the second largest fruit-shipping spot in Placer County. Only Newcastle, about 6 mi (9.7 km) east, was bigger.

Loomis became an official town on December 17, 1984. Before that, it was part of Placer County. Residents voted to become a town to keep their local control. They wanted to protect Loomis's "small town" feel. They also wanted to save historic buildings like the fruit packing sheds.
