Los Lagos is a city and commune in Chile. It is located in the Valdivia Province of the Los Ríos Region. The San Pedro River flows right by the city.
People of Los Lagos
In 2002, a study showed that Los Lagos had about 20,168 people living there. This included 10,370 men and 9,798 women.
About half of the people (9,479) lived in the city area. The other half (10,689) lived in the countryside. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Los Lagos grew by 8.6%.
Like many places in the Los Ríos and Los Lagos Regions, Los Lagos has many people with German family backgrounds.
How Los Lagos is Governed
Los Lagos is a "commune," which is like a local district in Chile. It has its own local government. This government is run by a group called the municipal council.
The leader of the commune is called an alcalde (mayor). The people of Los Lagos vote for their mayor every four years. From 2008 to 2012, the mayor was Samuel Torres Sepúlveda.
