The Lost Hills are a group of low hills or small mountains located in Kern County, California. They are part of a larger group of mountains called the Transverse Ranges. These hills are well-known because they contain a very important oil field.
What are the Lost Hills?
The Lost Hills are not very tall mountains. They are considered a "low mountain range" or simply hills. They are part of the Transverse Ranges, which is a unique group of mountains in Southern California. Unlike most mountain ranges in North America that run north-south, the Transverse Ranges run mostly east-west.
Where are the Lost Hills Located?
You can find the Lost Hills in the western part of Kern County. They are quite close to the town also named Lost Hills, California and the major highway, Interstate 5. The hills are also situated in the southwestern part of the San Joaquin Valley, a large and important agricultural region in California.
The Lost Hills Oil Field
One of the most important features of the Lost Hills is the Lost Hills Oil Field. An oil field is an area where a lot of petroleum (oil) is found underground. This particular oil field is the largest one in all of Kern County. Oil is a very important natural resource because it is used to make gasoline for cars, fuel for heating, and many other products we use every day. Finding and extracting oil from places like the Lost Hills Oil Field is a big industry in this part of California.
