Early Life and Political Start
Louis Aliot was born in Toulouse, France. His family has roots in Algeria. He began his political career as a regional councillor in 1998. He represented the Haute-Garonne area for six years.
Working with Jean-Marie Le Pen
Aliot became a close helper to Jean-Marie Le Pen, who was the leader of the National Front party. He played an important part in Le Pen's election campaign in 2002. After this, he was sent to Perpignan. His job was to help rebuild the party's local group there, which was having problems.
Regional Elections in 2004
In the 2004 regional elections, Aliot led the National Front's list of candidates in the Midi-Pyrénées region. His party received 11.78% of the votes in the first round. In the second round, they got 12.06% of the votes. This result led to eight regional councillors from his party being elected. For six years, from 2004 to 2010, he was the leader of the National Front group in the regional council.
Municipal Elections in 2008
In the 2008 local elections, Aliot led the National Front's list in Perpignan. His list received 12.29% of the votes in the first round. In the second round, they got 10.42% of the votes. Two municipal councillors from his party were elected. This was considered a good result for the National Front. Many other areas saw the party lose a lot of support.
Later Elections (2009-2011)
In a special local election in 2009, Aliot again led the National Front list. However, he lost his municipal seat in the first round. Since June 2009, the National Front has not had any representatives on the Perpignan municipal council. To be in the second round of a municipal election, a list needs at least 10% of the votes.
In the 2009 European elections, Aliot led the National Front list in the South-West France area. His party received 5.94% of the votes. This was not enough for him to become a MEP.
In the 2010 regional elections, Aliot led the list for the Pyrénées-Orientales area. His list received 13.64% of the votes in the first round. In the second round, they got 19.99% of the votes. This led to two councillors being elected in the Pyrénées-Orientales. After serving for twelve years in the Midi-Pyrénées regional council, he became a regional councillor in Languedoc-Roussillon in March 2010.
In March 2011, Louis Aliot traveled to Lampedusa island with Marine Le Pen. They also took part in a press conference in Rome.
In the 2011 local elections, Aliot was a candidate in Perpignan-9. He won the first round with 34.61% of the votes. However, he was defeated in the second round by the Socialist Party candidate.
Political Roles Since 2012
During the 2012 French presidential election, Louis Aliot was in charge of Marine Le Pen's campaign. He was also one of her main spokespeople. One important trip he made was to Israel in December 2011. There, he met with local politicians and French citizens to build connections.
Aliot also served as a spokesperson for his party during the 2012 legislative elections. In the Pyrénées-Orientales' 1st constituency, he received 24.13% of the votes in the first round. However, he finished in third place in the second round with 23.24% of the votes.
Becoming Mayor of Perpignan
In the municipal elections of 2020 in Perpignan, Aliot's list of candidates did very well. On March 15, his list was first in the initial round with 35.65% of the votes. This was much higher than the sitting mayor, Jean-Marc Pujol, who received 18.43%.
In June 2020, Louis Aliot won the election to become mayor of Perpignan. He received 54% of the votes, while the previous mayor, Jean-Marc Pujol, received 46%. This was a big win for Marine Le Pen's party. It was the first time they had won control of a city with more than 100,000 people. After he became mayor, his replacement, Catherine Pujol, took his seat in Parliament.
At his first city council meeting, Aliot voted to increase his own salary by 17%. This increase means he will earn an extra 60,000 euros over his time as mayor.
