A Look Back at Lower Marsh's Past
From Marshland to Market Street
Long ago, before the 1800s, much of northern Lambeth was a big, wet marsh. This area is now known as the South Bank. A settlement called Lambeth Marsh was built on a raised road that went over these marshy lands. Some people think this road might even be from Roman times!
The land where Lower Marsh now stands belonged to the Church of England. Lambeth Palace, a historic church building, is very close by. Old maps and records show that Lambeth Marsh was its own small village until the early 1800s.
How Lower Marsh Grew
Around the 19th century, the church started selling off small pieces of the land. This led to many individual houses being built. It was different from the bigger, planned developments happening north of the river.
Lower Marsh and a nearby street called The Cut became the main shopping and business area. This happened from the early 1800s onwards.
The Name and the Station
The northern part of the old parish of Lambeth was a marshy area. This is where the name "Lower Marsh" comes from. The marsh was drained in the 1700s, but its name lives on in the street.
After Waterloo railway station opened in 1848, the area around the station and Lower Marsh became known as Waterloo.
Modern Changes and Growth
For a while, Lower Marsh was seen as a less developed part of London. But recently, it has been getting a makeover! This process is called gentrification. It means an area becomes more popular and gets new shops and businesses.
Private companies and money from the Lambeth and Southwark councils have helped with these improvements.
