Loxford is a busy area located in Ilford, which is part of the London Borough of Redbridge in east London, UK. It's known for being a place where many different cultures and backgrounds come together.

Discovering Loxford's Past

Loxford has a long history! Long ago, in the Middle Ages, the land of Loxford belonged to Barking Abbey, a famous monastery. In 1319, the leader of the Abbey was allowed to cut down oak trees from Hainault Forest. This was to help rebuild her house in Loxford after a fire.

The building known today as Loxford Hall was first built around 1830. It was made even bigger about 30 years later, around 1860. Towards the end of the 1800s, many small, affordable houses were built in Loxford. This helped to fill the southern part of Ilford with homes.

The first schools in Loxford opened their doors in 1904. Today, Loxford School is a modern building that replaced an older secondary school. A new health center, called Loxford Polyclinic, opened in 2009. It was the first building specifically made for this purpose in the area.

Loxford is also home to Loxford Water, a small stream that flows into the River Roding. This stream forms the northern edge of Barking Park. Loxford Hall is now used as a special center for children and families.

Who Lives in Loxford?

Loxford is a very diverse place! According to the 2011 census, a large number of people living in the Loxford area of London Borough of Redbridge are of Pakistani background. They make up about 28.4% of the population, making them the largest ethnic group.

Other big groups include people of Indian heritage (15.6%) and other Asian backgrounds (10.4%). About 10.2% of the people are White British. This mix of cultures makes Loxford a unique and interesting community.

When it comes to religion, Islam was the most common faith in Loxford in 2011, followed by Christianity and Sikhism.

Where is Loxford Located?

Loxford is situated right between Ilford to its north and Barking to its south. The main road that runs through the area is Ilford Lane, also known as the A123 road.

Right next to Loxford School, there's a new housing project. About 159 new homes are being built where the old Hyleford Hostel and South Park Clinic used to be. These older buildings were taken down in 2023 to make way for the new homes.

Getting Around Loxford

Even though Loxford doesn't have its own train station, it's easy to get around using buses. The East London Transit bus service, specifically route EL1, connects Loxford to Ilford and Barking Riverside along Ilford Lane.

Other London Buses routes, like 169 and 366, also serve the area. Loxford is also connected to the wider National Road Network through the A123 Ilford Lane.
