Luis del Sol Cascajares (born April 6, 1935 – died June 20, 2021) was a famous Spanish football player. He played as a midfielder and later became a manager.
Luis del Sol played many games in La Liga, Spain's top football league, for Betis and Real Madrid. He won five major titles with Real Madrid. He was even nominated for the Ballon d'Or, an award for the best football player in the world.
He also played for the Spanish national team in two World Cups during the 1960s. After retiring as a player, he briefly managed his former club, Betis.

Playing Career Highlights
Starting with Betis and Real Madrid
Luis del Sol was born in a place called Arcos de Jalón in Spain. When he was just two months old, his family moved to Andalusia. He started his career in Spain playing for Real Betis. He helped Betis get promoted to La Liga in 1958. He played 40 games in the top league for Betis, scoring six goals.
In April 1960, Luis del Sol joined Real Madrid. In his first full season (1960–61), he scored 17 goals, which was his best scoring year. He played every minute of 29 games as his team won the Spanish league championship. That year, Real Madrid also won the Intercontinental Cup against Peñarol.
Playing in Italy
When he was 27, in 1962, Luis del Sol moved to Italy to play for Juventus FC. He was the first Spanish player ever to join Juventus. He played 292 matches for the club in total.
He scored 29 goals for Juventus. During his time there, he helped them win the Italian Cup in 1965. Two years later, in 1967, they also won the league title, known as Serie A.
In 1970, Luis del Sol moved to A.S. Roma. He played 57 games and scored four goals for Roma over two years. He even became the team captain, just like another Spanish player, Joaquín Peiró, had done before him. Luis del Sol played in Italy for a full ten years.
Returning to Betis
In 1972, Luis del Sol went back to play for Real Betis. After his team was relegated from the top league, he decided to retire from playing football at 38 years old.
After retiring, he became a coach for Betis's youth teams. He also managed the main Betis team for a short time. In 2001, he was in charge for 13 games when Betis returned to the top division.
International Career
Luis del Sol played 16 games for the Spanish national team and scored three goals. His first game for Spain was on May 15, 1960. It was a friendly match against England, which Spain won 3–0.
He played for Spain in the 1962 and 1966 FIFA World Cups. He played in four World Cup matches in total. Luis del Sol was also part of the Spanish team that won the 1964 European Nations' Cup (now called the UEFA European Championship). Even though he was part of the winning squad, he did not play in the final games of that tournament.
How He Played
Luis del Sol was known as a very complete midfielder. Many people thought he was one of the best players in his position during the 1960s. He was strong, energetic, and very smart on the field. He also had great technical skills.
He was known for his speed, hard work, and never giving up. He was good at chasing down opponents and stopping their attacks. After winning the ball, he could quickly start new attacks for his team. This was thanks to his smart movement and good passing. Besides his skills, he was also known for his strong personality and leadership.
His Real Madrid teammate, Alfredo Di Stéfano, gave him the nickname the postman. This was because Luis del Sol could cover the entire field, running everywhere like a postman delivering mail!
Death
Luis del Sol passed away on June 20, 2021, in Seville, Spain. He was 86 years old.
