Early Life and Musical Start
Luka Šulić was born in Maribor, Slovenia, on August 25, 1987. His father, Božo, is from Dubrovnik, Croatia, and his mother, Alja, is from Izola, Slovenia. Music is a big part of his family! His father is also a cellist, and many of his relatives are musicians.
Luka started learning to play the cello when he was just five years old. His father taught him the basics, and his mother helped him practice a lot. When he was fifteen, he became one of the youngest students ever to join the Music Academy in Zagreb. He finished his studies there when he was only 18.
After that, he continued his music education in Vienna and then at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He completed his master's degree in 2011.
Amazing Music Career
Luka Šulić performs all over the world. He plays classical music by himself and also performs with his 2CELLOS partner. He has won many important awards at music competitions. These include first prizes at the Lutosławski International Cello Competition in Warsaw (2009) and the European Broadcasting Union “New Talent” Competition (2006).
He has played solo and with other musicians in famous places like Wigmore Hall in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He has also performed with big orchestras, such as the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie and the Warsaw Philharmonic.
How 2CELLOS Became Famous
Luka's big break came when he teamed up with his friend and fellow cellist, Stjepan Hauser. They used to be rivals in cello competitions! In January 2011, they uploaded a video to YouTube. It was their cello version of Michael Jackson’s song “Smooth Criminal.”
The video quickly became super popular, getting over 7 million views in just a few weeks. This led to them signing a record deal with Sony MASTERWORKS. They were even invited to join the famous singer Elton John on his worldwide tour!
TV Appearances and Albums
As 2CELLOS, Luka and Stjepan appeared on many popular TV shows. They were on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and The Ellen DeGeneres Show multiple times. They also performed on the hit TV series Glee in January 2012.
In the Glee episode, they played “Smooth Criminal” as part of a tribute to Michael Jackson. This was special because it was the first time an instrumental duo had performed on the show as guests. Their version of the song became very popular.
From 2011 to 2018, 2CELLOS released five albums. These albums featured many different types of music, from pop and rock songs to classical pieces and movie themes.
Solo Projects
After the 2CELLOS US tour ended in 2019, Luka Šulić decided to take a break from the duo. He wanted to work on his own music projects. He released a solo album called Vivaldi: The four Seasons in November 2019. This album quickly reached number one on the music charts.
He recorded the album in Rome with an orchestra called the Archi dell’Accademia di Santa Cecilia. Luka shared that he had loved Vivaldi’s Four Seasons since he was a child. He always dreamed of playing these pieces on the cello. It took him two years to arrange the music for the cello while he was touring with 2CELLOS. He chose Rome for recording because Vivaldi was Italian. Luka hopes his album will help more people enjoy classical music.
From 2019 to 2022, Luka toured in Europe and Asia. He performed with Bulgarian pianist Evgeny Genchev as a duo. They played both classical and popular music. In 2024, Luka released another solo album called Life.
