Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Luka Šulić was born in Maribor, Slovenia. His father, Božo, is from Dubrovnik, Croatia. His mother, Alja, is from Izola, Slovenia. Luka's father is also a cellist. Many people in his family are involved in music.
Luka started learning music in Maribor when he was five years old. His father first taught him how to play the cello. His mother helped him practice a lot. When he was fifteen, he became one of the youngest students ever. He joined the Music Academy in Zagreb. He studied with Professor Valter Dešpalj and finished his studies at age 18. He then continued his education in Vienna. Luka earned his master's degree in London in 2011.
A Career in Music
Luka Šulić performs all over the world. He plays classical music by himself. He also performs with his partner from 2CELLOS. He has won many top awards. These include prizes at major music competitions.
He has played solo and with groups in many famous places. These include Wigmore Hall in London and Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. He has also performed with orchestras. Some of these are the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie and the Warsaw Philharmonic.
Becoming a Viral Sensation with 2CELLOS
Luka's big break came when he teamed up with his friend Stjepan Hauser. Stjepan was once his rival in cello competitions. In January 2011, they uploaded a video to YouTube. It was their cello version of "Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson.
In just a few weeks, their video became super popular. It quickly got over 7 million views. This success led to a record deal with Sony MASTERWORKS. They were also invited to join Elton John on his worldwide tour.
TV Appearances and Albums
The duo, 2CELLOS, appeared on many TV shows. They were on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. They also appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show twice. They were guests on Today with Kathy Lee and Hoda.
In January 2012, they were special musical guests on the TV show Glee. They played "Smooth Criminal" in an episode honoring Michael Jackson. This was the first time an instrumental duo performed on the show. Their version of the song became very popular. It reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 Digital Songs Chart. Their 2CELLOS album also entered the Top 100.
From 2011 to 2018, Luka released five albums with 2CELLOS. These albums featured different types of music. They included pop, rock, classical, and movie songs.
Solo Projects and New Music
After the 2CELLOS US tour ended in 2019, Luka Šulić took a break. He wanted to work on his own music. He released a solo album called Vivaldi: The four Seasons. This album became #1 in November 2019. He recorded it in Rome with a group called Archi dell’Accademia di Santa Cecilia.
Luka shared that he loved Vivaldi’s Four Seasons since he was a child. He heard it on a tape in his parents' car. He always dreamed of playing these pieces on the cello. It took him two years to arrange the music for cello. He did this note by note while touring with 2CELLOS. He chose Rome for recording because Vivaldi was Italian. He hopes his album will help more people enjoy classical music.
From 2019 to 2022, Luka toured in Europe and Asia. He performed with Bulgarian pianist Evgeny Genchev. They played their own versions of classical and popular songs.
