Luna Pier is a small city in Monroe County, Michigan. In 2020, about 1,382 people lived there. It was first called Lakewood in the early 1900s. It officially became a city in 1963.

The city is famous for its large, curved concrete pier. This pier is about 800 feet (244 meters) long. It stretches about 200 feet (61 meters) into Lake Erie. Sandy beaches are on both sides of the pier. You can often see the Davis–Besse Power Station and the Toledo Harbor Light from the pier. Students in Luna Pier attend Mason Consolidated Schools.

Where is Luna Pier?

Luna Pier is in the southeastern part of Monroe County. It is about 6 miles (9.7 km) north of the Ohio state border. The city sits right on the shore of Lake Erie. Interstate 75 runs along part of its western edge.

Detroit is about 45 miles (72 km) to the northeast. Toledo, Ohio, is about 12 miles (19 km) to the southwest. Monroe, the main city of the county, is 8 miles (13 km) north. The city covers a total area of 1.69 square miles (4.37 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

Getting Around Luna Pier

Interstate 75 (I-75) helps people travel to and from Luna Pier. This highway connects north to Detroit and south to Toledo, Ohio. You can get into the city from Exit 6, which is Luna Pier Road.

Two main roads lead in and out of Luna Pier. Luna Pier Road goes west to connect with other major highways. These include US Highway 23, US 24, and US 223. The other road, Gaynier Road, goes northwest out of town.

Trains used to serve Luna Pier. They carried coal to the Consumers Energy J.R. Whiting Generating Plant. This plant closed in 2016, so the trains stopped running. Other railroad tracks are in the area, but they are not currently used for businesses.

Luna Pier hosts several fun events each year:

  • Freedom Festival: This festival happens on the first Saturday in July. It features live music, food trucks, and city-wide garage sales. It ends with a fireworks display.
  • Sparkler 5K Run: This running event takes place on the first Sunday in July.
  • Luna Pier Farmer's Market: You can find fresh produce and goods from May through October. It is held on Wednesdays from 3 PM to 7 PM at First Street Park.
  • Luna Pier Indoor Farmer's Market: During colder months, from November to March, an indoor market is held. It takes place on the second and fourth Saturdays from 9 AM to 12 PM at Andrew's Place on Luna Pier Road.
