The oldest part of Lutherville began in 1852. It was started by two Lutheran ministers, Benjamin Kurtz and John Morris. They planned it as a community with a Lutheran seminary (a school for religious studies) and a church at its center. The land was bought in 1851 from the large Hampton Estate.

The ministers named the community after Martin Luther, a famous German reformer from the 16th century. The Lutherville Female Seminary opened in 1853. It was built close to the train tracks. In 1895, the school changed its name to the Maryland College for Women. After a big fire in 1911, the college was rebuilt. It continued to operate until 1952. Today, the old college campus is a living facility for adults called College Manor.

The Lutherville Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. This means it's a special place recognized for its history. Besides the old college building and many Victorian-style homes, other important buildings include:

  • St. Paul's Lutheran Church: This church was started in 1856 by John Morris. The stone building you see today was built in 1898.
  • St. John's Methodist Church: This church was built in 1869.
  • Church of the Holy Comforter: This Episcopal church was built in 1888.
  • Oak Grove: This house belonged to Lutherville founder John Morris. It was built in 1852 on Morris Avenue. The famous filmmaker John Waters lived here as a teenager in the 1960s. Some of his first movies were even made at this house!
  • Octagon House: This unique house on Kurtz Avenue was built in 1855. It's made of concrete and was built by another Lutheran minister who also worked as the town's postmaster.
