History of Luxeuil-les-Bains
Ancient Times
Long ago, Luxeuil-les-Bains was a Roman town called Luxovium. It had many beautiful buildings. Sadly, in 451 AD, invaders called the Huns destroyed much of it.
The Famous Abbey
In 590 AD, a holy man named St Columban started a monastery here. This Abbey of Luxeuil became very famous. It was one of the most important places in the region of Franche-Comté.
Times of Trouble
Over the centuries, the town and monastery faced many attacks. In the 8th century, the Saracens destroyed it. Later, in the 9th century, the Normans, Magyars, and Muslims also attacked and robbed the town. These attacks show that no place in Europe was truly safe during those times.
Abbey's Influence and End
During the Middle Ages, the abbey's schools were well-known. The abbots, who were leaders of the monastery, had a lot of power. However, their power was later reduced by Emperor Charles V. Finally, the abbey was closed down during the French Revolution.
