Past Communities in Lyle Township
Troy Settlement
The old settlement of Troy was located on the Cedar River. It was started on March 24, 1857, by John Tift. Troy once had a dam, a sawmill (for cutting wood), a grist mill (for grinding grain), and a hotel. However, like Cedar City, it faced problems in the spring of 1858.
Cedar City Settlement
John Chandler came to Lyle Township in 1856. He later gave his land rights to Caleb Stock and John Phelps. These two men, along with T.N. Stone, built a dam using stones and timber. They then built a sawmill and a grist mill behind it.
However, in the spring of 1858, there were unusually heavy rains. The new dam couldn't handle the high water levels and broke apart. The dam and mills were never rebuilt. Some of the people who lived in this short-lived settlement are buried in the nearby Cedar City Cemetery.
