History of Lytle Creek
In 1851, a group of Mormon settlers arrived in the valley. They set up camp near a canyon where a creek flowed. This creek moved quickly southeast towards the Santa Ana River.
The settlers were very happy to find so much water. They also saw many willows, cottonwoods, and sycamores growing. The hillsides were covered in mustard plants and wild oats. The settlers of San Bernardino named the stream "Lytle Creek." They named it after their leader, Captain Andrew Lytle.
Lytle Creek Canyon has been used for many things over the years. People have mined for gold there. It has also been a place for farming. Since the early 1870s, it has been a popular spot for fun activities. These include fishing, camping, picnicking, and hiking.
